  • Area Attractions

  • Lake Tahoe, located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and bordering both California and Nevada, is a vacationer*s paradise. In winter, Lake Tahoe is the country*s premier skiing destination. Activities like snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, sledding, and even sleigh riding can be a part of your winter fun. In summer, Lake Tahoe sheds its winter coat, and emerges as an excellent summer vacation destination as well. Visitors can enjoy sailing, water sports, beaches, golf, rock climbing, horseback riding, bungee jumping, parasailing, camping, ballooning. For perhaps the most picturesque view on the lake, check out the overlook at Emerald Bay. This perfect cove, enclosed by pine trees, has the lake's only island, Fannette. Make sure you hike the 1 mile trek down to Vikingsholm Castle, considered to be the finest example of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere. Tours of the castle are offered in the summer. Golfers will seek out both the Championship Course and the Mountain Course, located in Incline Village. If these courses are booked, there are over 20 others to choose from around Lake Tahoe. Also in Incline, have some fun visiting the Ponderosa Ranch. See where Hoss, Little Joe, and the rest of the Cartwright family spent time while filming the television series Bonanza. The ranch contains the Cartwright house, and a mock-up of an entire Old West town complete with working blacksmiths, a saloon, a shooting gallery, and even live gunfights. The best way to see the lake is to actually get out on it. More than a dozen different companies offer charter cruises of the lake. The vessels vary in amenities, and offer activities like ballroom dancing, live music, champagne brunches, sunset and dinner excursions, and apres-ski outings. Lake Tahoe*s deep water makes fishing a challenging proposition. There are plenty of places for the native Rainbow, Mackinaw, and Brown trout, to hide. Fishing charters, with knowledgeable guides who know the best fishing holes, can be hired from all around the lake. Nearby Fallen Leaf Lake is also a prime spot for bass and trout fishing. In summer, the South Tahoe Shore beaches come alive with sun bathers, jet skiers, and small craft sailors. Kiva Beach has gorgeous white sand and is a great place for a scenic view of Heavenly Resort. Kings Beach State Park, in North Lake Tahoe, offers all sorts of water related activities. Parasailing is very popular in this neck of the Tahoe woods. Kayakers and canoeists can rent equipment here as well. On the western shore of Lake Tahoe, D.L.Bliss State Park offers a gorgeous beach area, and miles of trails that take you to scenic vistas above the lake. Just south of Incline Village, Sand Harbor State Park, is popular for its white sand beaches, and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. For an exhilarating experience, head north to Truckee, and go whitewater rafting down the Truckee River. For a great excursion, head south to majestic Yosemite National Park. See Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in the continental US and one of the tallest waterfalls in the world. Take a gander at some of the world's largest trees, the incomprehensible Giant Sequoias, some of which are 3200 years old. Hike the vast network of trails that lead to such famous peaks as El Capitan, Half Dome, and Glacier Point. Go white-water rafting on the Tuolumne River. Cycle the 10 miles of paths that wind through the valley. Three stables offer guided horseback riding tours of the area.
